Illinois Senate Bill 737, a bill that called for a massive expansion of gaming that would have permitted several new land-based casinos, including one in downtown Chicago, as well as legalizing slot machines at horse racing tracks, was approved by a House executive committee last week and was soon sent to the floor for a vote.

Though racing supporters of the legislation held out hope to the end, Senate Bill 737 never was put forth for a vote in the full House.

In the end, as has happened in the past, the bill did not make the leadership’s “must-do” list. A new Illinois legislature was to be sworn in Wednesday, which means that any gaming legislation in 2011 will have to start once again at the beginning of the legislative process.
